Cathar castles ...

Little known today is the Aude region, situated in Languedoc-Roussillon/Occitanie.

In the south of France,  towards the southern tip of the department, there are rocky, haughty hills guarding the country, where medieval invasions frequently ran towards the north. Several castles were built there. So at the top, being the same colour as the rock, the enemy did not see them from afar.

The most famous are Aguilar, Puilaurens, Thermes, and Queribus.

Like the other castles, at sunset Queribus is an enchanting sight.

They are these days called Cathar castles. This is wrong. They were not built (except for Montségur, on the left) by heretic Cathars  who were afraid of being burnt. They sheltered themselves behind the huge stones of 4-5 metre thick walls.

Invaders had difficulty spotting the buildings,  but  on the other hand refugees could easily see royal or papal troops approaching to capture them.

Puilaurens castle is the same colour as the rock.

Catharism came from eastern Europe (11/12th century), as a reaction to the unequal feudal regime.

Heretics thought all men were equal before God.

The 13th was a  century of persecution in the Aude department. Historically famous.
